On the Passing of Yvonne Fummerton

KamLSB was saddened to hear of the passing of its Chair, Yvonne Fummerton on May11, 2024. Yvonne volunteered to serve on the KamLSB at a meeting in early October in 2018. She was new to Kam and wanted to contribute to the community. On that night the power was out and the meeting was held using flashlights and candles. Yvonne was not fazed by this unusual beginning.

The next year Yvonne was elected Chair of KamLSB. She led us through some of KamLSB’s reorganization, the problems arising from Covid 19, and high inflation. Yvonne had a large plastic and rubber headed mallet that she used sparingly but effectively. Yvonne put in a lot of time serving Kam in the past 6 years and our community is better for her efforts.

KamLSB will miss Yvonne and her service to Kam.

Who we are

The Kaministiquia Local Services Board (KamLSB) is a Local Services Board (LSB) created under the Northern Services Board Act (NSBA).

An LSB can deliver Approved Services in areas without municipal organization. The NSBA lays out how LSBs can be formed, what they can do as Approved Services, and how they operate.  “An LSB is not a municipality and does not have the same authority as one.” (https://www.ontario.ca/page/local-service-boards).

Kaministiquia Area residents met and voted to form a Local Services Board. Area residents can also vote to change the boundaries of the LSB, add or remove services and to begin the dissolution of the LSB when deemed necessary.

KamLSB offers 2 Approved Services: Fire Protection and Recreation.

KamLSB delivers Fire Protection Services through the Kaministiquia Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD).

Recreation Services are delivered under contract by the Kaministiquia Community Centre Association (KCCA)

About the community

of Kaministiquia

We would like to acknowledge that we are in Robinson-Superior Treaty territory and that the land on which we gather is the traditional territory of the Anishnaabeg and the Métis.
In the late 19th century, settlers started to arrive from various areas of Europe, which included a large number of Finnish people. Today, you will find a diversity of nationalities in Kaministiquia, living alongside some of the original families, thereby forming a colorful assortment of citizens shaping the community of Kaministiquia (or Kam for short).

Kaministiquia offers some great outdoor recreational opportunities, such as fishing, hunting and boating on the Dog River, or canoeing in the serenity of Little Dog Lake.
Kayaking the white water of Crooked Rapids is also a popular sport, along with cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, hiking, biking, ATV exploring and nature walking.
